National Parks

Conguillio National Park is one of Chile's most spectacular protected areas, centered around the massive Llaima Volcano. The park's name comes from the Mapudungun word "ko-ngi-lliu," meaning "water with monkey puzzle nuts," referring to the ancient Araucaria araucana (monkey puzzle) trees that dominate the landscape. These prehistoric trees, some over 2,000 years old, create an otherworldly atmosphere reminiscent of Jurassic forests.

Huerquehue National Park is a compact but stunning protected area known for its pristine mountain lakes and ancient Araucaria forests. The park's most famous trail, the Los Lagos (The Lakes) circuit, takes hikers through multiple elevations and ecosystems, passing turquoise lakes set like jewels among volcanic peaks and monkey puzzle trees. The name "Huerquehue" means "place of messengers" in Mapudungun.

Malalcahuello National Reserve surrounds the spectacular Lonquimay Volcano and its famous Navidad Crater. This 12,789-hectare reserve is renowned for its pristine Araucaria forests, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and excellent winter sports opportunities. The name "Malalcahuello" means "corral of horses" in Mapudungun, reflecting the area's historical use by Mapuche communities.

Tolhuaca National Park protects 6,474 hectares of pristine Andean wilderness surrounding the Tolhuaca Volcano. The park is famous for its spectacular Malleco Falls, which plunge 50 meters into a narrow volcanic gorge, creating one of Chile's most impressive waterfalls. The park's relatively low elevation and gentle terrain make it one of the most family-friendly destinations in the region.

Villarrica National Park encompasses the iconic Villarrica Volcano and surrounding ancient forests, covering over 63,000 hectares of pristine wilderness. The park is dominated by its namesake volcano, one of South America's most active, whose persistent lava lake creates a mesmerizing glow visible at night. The park's diverse landscapes range from temperate rainforests with towering coihue and lenga trees to alpine tundra at higher elevations.
