Malalcahuello National Reserve surrounds the spectacular Lonquimay Volcano and its famous Navidad Crater. This 12,789-hectare reserve is renowned for its pristine Araucaria forests, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and excellent winter sports opportunities. The name “Malalcahuello” means “corral of horses” in Mapudungun, reflecting the area’s historical use by Mapuche communities.
The reserve offers something for every season: world-class backcountry skiing and the Corralco Ski Resort in winter, and excellent hiking, mountain biking, and volcano climbing in summer. The Coloradito trail leads through ancient forests to volcanic viewpoints, while more adventurous visitors can attempt the climb to Lonquimay’s summit or explore the relatively new Navidad Crater. Natural hot springs scattered throughout the reserve provide perfect spots to relax after a day of adventure. The reserve’s elevation and location create reliable snow conditions, making it one of South America’s premier winter sports destinations.
